MID-WINTER DELIGHTS

IMG_0397If there’s such a thing as the dog days of winter, we must be in them. But never fear, the days can be brightened and warmed with both reds and whites. Here are a few suggestions that may make spring seem like hours, as opposed to months, away. Give ‘em a try.

RED

Henri Milan CDR. As a good a Cote du Rhone as you’ll find for the money. Mostly Grenache with a little Syrah., and it’s organic.            $14.99

La Planta Ribera Duero. 100% Tempranillo. Muy bueno. Full-bodied, smoky, great dark berry fruit, with a hint of tobacco.             $15.99

Terenzi Morelino di Scansano.  100% Sangiovese from Tuscany.  A great recent find. Medium-bodied, blackberry, cassis, also organic.  $16.99

Viendo Tannat. Yes, Uraguay makes wine and the Tannat grape is the star. We’ve made many a friend with this full-bodied red.  $15.99

Tire Pe Diem. A biodynamic/organic Bordeaux, made from almost all Merlot. Taste what a real Bordeaux red should taste like for a fraction of the big boys’ price. $14.99

WHITE

Gelida Xarel-lo. Organic white from Spain, made from 100% Xarel-lo, one of three grapes used to make Cava. A full-bodied stone-fruit-and-citrus crowd pleaser.  $11.99

Fratassi Falanghina Taburno.  100% Falanghina from Campagna Italy. Brand new to the fold and amazing. Organic/biodynamic, A gorgeous medium-bodied mouthful of melon, apricot and lemongrass.  $15.99

Brocard St-Bris.  100% Sauvignon Blanc from Chablis, of all places. Organic, medium-bodied, with subtle citrusy flavors. Unscrew the cap and enjoy.   $14.99

Esporao Verdelho.  Portugal is rocking and this white is perfect proof. Crisp, clean, dry Verdelho, light-bodied, a perfect balance of ripe fruit and acidity.  $11.99

Montinore Almost Dry Riesling.  Biodynamic/organic white from Oregon. Nectarine, and lime with just a hint of residual sugar.Low alcohol, high quality. Just a really enjoyable quaff.   $13.99

 ROSE

Juve y Camps Cava Rose.  Another new member to the family from Spain.  Unusual because it’s 100% Pinot Noir. When you see its gorgeous cherry color, you’ll want to guzzle it right in the store. Please don’t. Wait until you get home.  $16.99
